We came in to Shaw AFB famcamp with no reservations on Labor Day 2017 and found several open sites. The office was closed so we just picked one of the 10 new sites with FHU. The new area has asphalt roads and the sites are level with a concrete pad for a new handicap picnic table and grill. There is no cable and we did not get a chance to check the wifi. The lighting is good and it was very quiet. There is a shoppette just after entering the main gate (contractor gate is closed on weekends) for quick food, ice, fuel (no diesel), etc. The Commissary, Exchange and medical facility are easy to find buton the other side of the base (not walking distance). There are several eating establishments just outside the gate and a Wal Mart several miles away on Highway 378We found no sign of homesteaders however one site looked to be occupied 30 days or so. For exercise, the Famcamp is situated in the middle of the paved 1.5 mile paved track that the military uses for training purposes. Tall pines provide morning and afternoon shade.
